Bowman Design Forum
The 12th annual Bowman Design Forum of the
College of Architecture, Planning and Design was held November 17 on the K-State
campus. The Forum brings internationally
acclaimed architects to campus to discuss third-year work by students in the K-State
Department of Architecture.
This year’s invited guests were Kirsten R. Murray, AIA, and
Les Eerkes, AIA, of Olson Kundig Architects in Seattle. The guest jurors also
presented lectures following the forum. Other jurors included Brent Bowman and
Patrick Schaub, principals at Bowman Bowman Novick, the event sponsor.
One
student from each of five third-year studio sections was selected to present
his or her design for a theoretical 15,700 square foot Wildcat Winery to be
located on the Konza Prairie south of Manhattan. The program called for design
of a small winery to experiment in the making of a variety of wines. The winery
would also serve as an educational facility where Kansas winemakers could learn
new techniques and where the public could learn to appreciate the quality of
Kansas wines. Visitors would have an opportunity to sample a variety of Kansas
wines, observe the wine marking process and on certain occasions take guided
tours of the Konza vinyards. The Konza prairie site was chosen because of its
spectacular views, visibility, ease of access to the public, and potential to
utilize the slope of the land to create a constant temperature and
humidity-controlled wine storage chamber.
A
model, drawings and a Powerpoint presentation of ideas were prepared by each
student participant.
After hearing about and viewing the student presentations,
the visiting critics evaluated the designs and awarded $2,400 in prize money. Honor
awards and $750 each went to Katie Gallagher, Saint Peters, MO, and Garrett
Kilbride, Rolling Meadows, IL. Their studio professors were David Sachs and Torgeir
Norheim, respectively.
Receiving honorable mention awards and $300 each were Zach
Bodine, Lenexa, KS; Josh Goldstein, Littleton, CO; and Ryan Stumpf, St. Louis,
MO. Their studio professors were Thom Allen, Emily Koenig and Diana Trushell,
respectively.
The guest jurors made some positive observations about the
students’ work. According to Schaub, “The jurors were really impressed with the
amount of thought and work that went into the projects. Their solutions were
impressive, especially for third-year students. Our guest jurors used the word
‘ambitious’ to describe their handling of a complex program on a sensitive
site. The development of the concepts and the awareness of tectonics are to be
applauded.”
Brent Bowman, a
1972 K-State architecture graduate and principal of the Manhattan and Kansas
City-based architecture firm Bowman Bowman Novick, sponsors the forum. In
addition to funding the honoraria and travel expenses of the jurors and
providing prize money for the students, Bowman hosts luncheon and dinner
gatherings which allow students to interact informally with the jurors.
