Tuesday, April 21st, 2009

Carolyn (Lyn) Norris-Baker is recognized for 27 years of dedicated service to Kansas State University and the College of Architecture, Planning and Design. Lyn is retiring at the end of the 2008-2009 school year but will continue part-time teaching for the Center for Aging via distance learning.

Lyn was born in Wilmington, Delaware. She earned a bachelor of arts and a bachelor of architecture from Rice University, and a master of arts and a Ph.D. from the University of Houston. She joined the K-State architecture faculty in 1982 as an assistant professor, and also held an adjunct appointment with the Department of Psychology. In 1986, Lyn was promoted to associate professor and in 1993 to professor, the first female architecture professor in our college’s history.

In 1986, Lyn became the coordinator of the graduate degree program in the Department of Architecture, a role she held until 1993 when she was selected to receive a joint appointment as the director of the K-State Center for Aging. In this capacity, she was able to further her research and expertise in the area of gerontology and architecture for aging populations.

Beginning in the fall of 2004, Lyn began phased retirement, teaching via distance education courses for the K-State Center for Aging, as well as participating on graduate committees and engaging in scholarship activities.

We express our sincere appreciation to Lyn for her efforts through the years in teaching, advising, research, service, scholarship and administrative activities.  We wish her well in her future endeavors.
