In its annual Regional Student Competition for Kansas State University interior architecture and product design students, the Kansas City Architects, Designers, Dealers and Representatives (KCADDR) awarded the following prizes.

Large furniture:

First place - Abby Mann, Ellisville, MO
Second place - Derek Case, McPherson, KS
Third place - Meghan Wilson, Swansea, IL
Fourth place - Matthew Johnson, Shawnee, KS

Mann and Case are May 2009 receipients of the Master of Interior Architecture and Product Design. Wilson and Johnson will complete their Master of Interior Architecture and Product Design in May of 2010.

Small furniture:

First place - Alexandra Miller, Overland Park, KS
Second place - Sierra Withers, Erie, KS
Third place - Kaitlin Holle, Lebanon, IL

These students have just finished their third year of studies in the interior architecture and product design program of the College of Architecture, Planning and Design.

The furniture was made during the 2008-2009 academic year in furniture design and construction studio classes instructed by Professors David Brown, Steve Davidson, and Rod Troyer.

In his prize presentation remarks, juror representative Mike Kirkpatrick said the jurors used three criteria-design, marketability and craftsmanship-to make their award decisions. “Many of the jurors have juried this competition for a number of years,” he said. “We never cease to be amazed at the ever-increasing level of creativity and workmanship in the students’ furniture designs and construction. Coming to K-State each year for this competition is something we truly look forward to,” Kirkpatrick said.

The KCADDR is a furniture and furnishings interest group in the metropolitan Kansas City area.  This year’s competition jurors included Kathy Anderson, Designtex; Sara DiMaggio, Interior Landscape, Inc.; Marie Glavas, sales representative; Bill Gapske, Sr., sales representative; Ken Harris, Burns and McDonnell; Mike Kirkpatrick, Encompas; Ed Kinney and Jim Pettijohn, Pettijohn Kinney Architects and Interiors; Mark Lowe, Nautilus Design; Jennifer Peterson, designer; and Ray Secrest, Secrest Architectural Interiors.
