Rick Martin is 2009 Commencement Speaker
Rick Martin received the bachelor of architecture from K-State in 1976 and has enjoyed a successful career as an architect, civic steward and uncompromising supporter of K-State.
As a senior principal and director
of Populous of Kansas City, Rick has played a pivotal role in the firm’s
success. In its 25-year history, Populous, formerly known as HOK Sport Venue
Event, has been responsible for more
than 1,000 stadia, arena, ballpark and convention center projects around the
globe. With construction valued at more than $20 billion, many of these
projects have drastically changed the urban landscape of their communities.
Currently leading design efforts for new arenas for the Pittsburgh Penguins of
the National Hockey League, the Orlando Magic of the National Basketball
Association, the City of Louisville, Kentucky and Sedgwick County, Kansas, Rick
has also led such projects as the Sprint Center in Kansas City, Philips Arena
in Atlanta and the Toyota Center in Houston. His projects have been recognized
with more than 50 local, state and national design awards.
When he’s not at his drawing board, Rick is likely supporting his alma mater. A
long-time football and basketball season ticket holder, he also chairs the Dean’s
Advisory Council of the College of Architecture, Planning and Design and is a trustee
of the Kansas State University Foundation. He serves on the International
Association of Assembly Managers Foundation board and is a member of the
American Institute of Architects, Stadium Managers Association, the National
Association for Sports Commissions and the Council for Urban Economic
Development.
Rick and his wife, Renay, have two children and a granddaughter, whose favorite color is definitely purple.
