Student Places in Light Fixture Design Competition

Wednesday, May 13th, 2009

Ali Johnson received a citation for presentation for her entry in the Robert Bruce Thompson Charitable Trust 2009 Student Light Fixture Design Competition.

The 2009 competition posed the design problem of creating a lighting fixture for the fitting rooms of a national retail clothing chain that flatters both the clothes and the customer. The students’ design solutions could be mounted on the wall or the ceiling; considered the issues of aesthetics, color rendering, glare and maintenance; and used energy-efficient, long life lamps.

Johnson’s citation, which included a plaque and a $500 cash award, was for “Wrapped,” her entry for a glowing translucent wall backlit with LEDs. The judges appreciated the modular design saying, “A customer using the fitting room would be enveloped with the light. The concept was clearly and attractively presented with text and graphics.”

Johnson is receiving her master of interior architecture and product design this month. She is from Topeka, KS.

Her major professors for this project were Sung-Soo “Cliff” Shin and Neal Hubbell.

The annual Student Light Fixture Design Competition is administered by the Robert Bruce Thompson Charitable Trust of San Francisco. The trust was established to give awards to students to encourage the study of light fixture design. Competition entrants must be full-time students majoring in architectural engineering, architecture, interior design, theatre or industrial design and enrolled in accredited degree programs in the U.S. Because of the high level of competition, entrants are undergraduate seniors or graduate students. Five of the 163 entries in the 2009 competition received special recognition.
