2009 Student Rendering Competition

Entries for the Kansas State University College of Architecture, Planning, and Design Sixteenth Annual Student Rendering Competition are displayed in the Chang Gallery of Seaton Hall through Friday, April 10.  The exhibit is open to the public weekdays from 8:00 a.m. through 5:00 p.m.

The competition was open to all students in the College of Architecture, Planning, and Design. According to competition organizer Fayez Husseini, professor of interior architecture and product design, there were three competition objectives:  to promote interaction and constructive competition between students in the college regardless of major or level; to expose faculty and students to top-quality student work, to discover hidden talent, and to encourage students with special skills to market and express their talent; and to gain intellectual, emotional and monetary recognition from faculty, staff and students.

The competition jury was composed of Mr. Daniel Creekmore, K-State interior architecture alumnus and vice president, M2 Studio, Dallas and Kansas City; Dean John Gaunt FAIA, School of Architecture and Urban Design, University of Kansas, Lawrence; Mr. Ted Knapp, K-State architecture alumnus and principal, TK Architects, Kansas City; Mr. Ron Reid, K-State architecture alumnus and principal, Ron Reid Associates, Kansas City; and Ms. Lauren Wendlandt, K-State architecture alumnus and principal, Framework Design, Kansas City.

Eighteen of the 58 entries in the blind competition were selected to receive awards:

Mixed Media:  First Place - Elvis Achelpohl, fifth-year architecture, Kansas City, MO; Second Place - Adam Wagoner, fifth-year architecture, McPherson, KS.

Freehand, Black and White:  First Place - Kirk Chonis, second-year architecture, Parkville, MO; Second Place - Vanessa Liu, second-year architecture, Manila, Philippines; Third Place - Nathaniel Smith, fifth-year architecture, St. Louis, MO; Honorable Mention - Matthew Griswold, fifth-year architecture, Overland Park, KS; Omar Herrera, fourth-year architecture, Emporia, KS; Kelsey Kern, fifth-year landscape architecture, Omaha, NE.

Computer:  First Place - Christopher Morton, fifth-year landscape architecture, Centennial, CO; Second Place - Adam Pfeifer, fifth-year architecture, Hays, KS; Third Place - Jill Eckloff, fifth-year architecture, Kearney, NE; Honorable Mention - Matthew Griswold.

Freehand, Color:  First Place - Pat Kost, fifth-year architecture, Blue Springs, MO; Second Place - John Perry, post-baccalaureate landscape architecture, Sioux Falls, SD; Third Place (tie) - Karina Perez-Fajardo, fourth-year architecture, Topeka, KS; Nicholas Turner, fifth-year architecture, Jefferson City, MO; Honorable Mention - Joseph Binter, fifth-year architecture, Wichita, KS; Stephanie Pile, fourth-year architecture, Centennial, CO.

Prizes valued at $130 for First Place, $100 for Second Place, $75 for Third Place and $50 for Honorable Mention were awarded. The competition prizes are sponsored by Ted and Sue Knapp, TK Architects, Kansas City, MO.
