Architecture Student Among Competition Winners

Thursday, February 5th, 2009

A design by K-State architecture student Adam Wagoner was among the six winners of the third annual national American Institute of Architecture Students (AIAS)/Kawneer competition.

Wagoner, a fifth-year architecture student from McPherson, Kansas, received honorable mention and $500 for his project entitled “Kansas City Mediatheque.” The K-State AIAS chapter also received a cash prize.

The winning designs were displayed at the AIAS Forum 2008 convention held in December, 2008, in Denver. The projects will also be exhibited at the 2009 American Institute of Architects (AIA) National Convention and Design Exposition in San Francisco in late April, 2009.

The competition, sponsored by Kawneer and administered by AIAS, challenged students to learn about building materials, primarily Kawneer’s architectural aluminum building products, systems and their assembly, in the design of a library at a site of the students’ choice. The 441 students/teams were asked to research, respond to and highlight the unique aspects of designing a library to serve the selected site and community both now and in the future, as well as to design a sustainable facility utilizing USGBC LEED building standards.

Wagoner’s library of the future, sited in metropolitan Kansas City, Missouri, addressed the fundamental change in the way space is perceived and experienced because of the computer and the internet and the great wealth of information to which these tools provide access.

The competition jurors included Richard L. Hayes, AIA, CAE, PhD, Staff Director at the American Institute of Architects; David R. Moore, AIA, partner at Craig, Gaulden & Davis in Greenville, South Carolina; and Barbara J. Norland, Senior Librarian, Library Buildings for the Washington DC Public Library.

Wagoner’s winning project was done under the direction of K-State architecture professor Vladimir Krstic.
