AIAS Presents Community Service Award
The Kansas
State University
chapter of the American Institute of Architecture Students (AIAS) has presented
Bill Dorsett with its 2008 Community Service Award.
A Manhattan
resident who is a contractor and solar systems expert, Dorsett has worked with
renewable energy for more than 30 years. He is best known for his work on the UFM Community
Learning Center
at 1221 Thurston Street.
Dorsett donated time, effort and expertise to the College of Architecture,
Planning and Design’s entry in the 2007 solar decathlon. Working as a volunteer
alongside the students, Dorsett helped with the solar energy power portion of
the project which scored well in the competition. Because of his great attitude
and positive personality, Dorsett was always available and willing to share his
time and expertise with the students.
AIAS President and fourth-year architecture student Jared
Sang announced the award at the fall 2008 Architecture Evening. K-State’s AIAS
membership is composed of students studying in the College of Architecture,
Planning and Design at K-State. According to Sang, nominations of persons who
demonstrate dedication to the community and to students were solicited from
faculty members. “The nominations were then researched and discussed by the
AIAS officers,” Sang said. “Bill Dorsett is a deserving recipient of this
award,” Sang said. “He has had made a significant and positive difference in
the quality of the built environment in Kansas.”
