Architecture Student Selected in Competition
Five students received top honors in the recent U.S. Stone Competition, held by the Kansas State University Department of Architecture for its second-year students.
Selected to receive first prize and $1000 was Lucas Bergstrom, Lawrence, Kansas. Second prize and $500 went to Lee Watson, Columbia, MO. Sara Dews, Columbia, MO, was selected to receive third prize and $250. Honorable mention and $100 each went to Luke Brohmer, Colorado Springs, CO, and Vanessa Liu, the Philippines.
The prizes were announced at an October 3 reception for the students and faculty sponsored by U.S. Stone. Professors Thom Allen, Robert Condia, Richard Hoag and Don Watts were second-year studio critics.
Sponsored by U.S. Stone of Kansas, the 2008 project program was entitled “The Nature of Repose.” The project asked students to design and draw a place of repose that was respectful of nature and enlivened the experience of visitors to the Konza Prairie. The two elements required in each project were a wall and a shade structure for a site at the hiking trail bridge over Kings Creek.
As part of the two-week studio project, all second-year architecture students toured the U.S. Stone quarry near Cottonwood Falls, witnessed stone cutting at the Herington plant and attended a lecture entitled “Listening to Stone” by sculptor and environmental artist Dan Snow. The students studied the project site at the Konza Prairie and, with Mr. Snow, practiced stacking stone to repair historic dry laid walls.
Competition jurors included Katie Kingery-Page, K-State Department of Landscape Architecture/Regional and Community Planning; Brent Bayer, president of U.S. Stone; and Bruce McMillan AIA, Manhattan architect and K-State alumnus.
