2007 Bowman Design Forum

Thursday, December 13th, 2007

The ninth annual Bowman Design Forum of the College of Architecture, Planning and Design was held on the K-State campus on December 5, 2007. The Forum brings internationally acclaimed architects to campus to discuss third-year work by students in the K-State Department of Architecture.

This year’s invited guests were Joan Soranno and John Cook of Hammel, Green and Abrahamson, Minneapolis, Minnesota. The jurors also presented a guest lecture following the forum. Other jurors included Brent Bowman and Patrick Schaub, principals at Bowman Bowman Novick.

Two students from each of four third-year studio sections were selected to present their designs for a hypothetical 18,600 square foot visitor center to serve as a gateway for the promotion of experiential tourism in the Flint Hills. The program called for a facility and adjoining landscape that demonstrated the principles and best practices of ecological and sustainable design. The gateway center, to be located at the intersection of Interstate 70 and state highway 177, was to house commercial services as well as a prairie interpretive center.

Each student prepared a model, drawings and a Powerpoint presentation of his or her ideas.

After hearing and viewing the student presentations, the visiting critics evaluated the designs and awarded $2,000 in prize money. The jury gave an Honor Award and $1000 to Amanda Garbach, Overland Park, KS. Merit Awards and $500 each went to Aaron Dyck, North Newton, KS, and Eric Salmon, Kimberling City, MO.

Additional student participants were Sam Bowling, Cockeysville, MD; Rachel Duncan, O’Fallon, MO; Andrew Faires, Wichita, KS; Laura Herron, Hesston, KS; and Joshua Perez, Franklin Grove, IL.

The guest jurors made some positive observations about the students’ work. According to Schaub, “The students designed some sophisticated, outstanding products in the short six-week period allotted to the project.” He also said, “The guest jurors were sensitive to the students ideas and articulated both appreciation and constructive criticism.”

Due to local interest in the idea of a Flint Hills visitor center, invited guests in attendance at the student presentations included Karen Hibbard, Vice President, Manhattan Convention and Visitors’ Bureau, and Linda Craghead, Director, Flint Hills Tourism Coalition.

Third-year architecture studio instructors were Professors Gary Coates, Richard Gnat, Paul Holmquist and James Jones, who also served as project coordinator.

Brent Bowman, a 1972 K-State architecture graduate and principal of the Manhattan and Kansas City based architecture firm Bowman Bowman Novick, sponsors the forum. In addition to funding the honoraria and travel expenses of the jurors and providing prize money for the students, Bowman hosts luncheon and dinner gatherings which allow students to interact informally with the jurors.
