Architecture Professor to be Featured on HGTV
Work by Larry Bowne, assistant professor of architecture in the College of Architecture, Planning and Design at K-State, will be featured in an upcoming episode of “Small Space Big Style” on Home & Garden Television.
The episode will premiere on Thursday, October 18, at 5:00 pm CST. HGTV’s website describes the episode as follows:
Small Space Design
Go small without feeling like you live in a shoebox! Check out a New York apartment packed with collections, a modern bungalow in Austin, urban style in Buffalo and seamless design in NYC.
Bowne’s project is a New York City apartment for David Depoalo, a consultant for the food-service industry. The apartment features an elaborate series of built-in cabinets and room-sized furniture, which open up in surprising ways to include all the conveniences of contemporary living in a compressed space.
Collaborating extensively with local artisans, Bowne and the design team created a highly customized apartment with a luminous, cloudlike appearance. Closets, appliances, and cabinetry appear mysteriously abstract. The aesthetic impact is enhanced by numerous design innovations, including lighting recessed in coves throughout the apartment, reflective matte surfaces that refract light, and translucent panels that veil objects and seemingly glow from within.
Bowne joined K-State’s architecture faculty in the fall of
2003. After earning a bachelor of arts in political science from UCLA and a
master of architecture from Harvard, he served an internship in Boston and New
York City. In 1997, Bowne opened a partnership in New York City. The firm,
B&R Projects, prepared designs for projects in New York
City, the U.S.
and abroad, including commissions in Buenos Aires,
Zurich, and
Kosovo. While the firm worked primarily on New York City residential apartments, they
also designed retail, commercial and public spaces. Since 2003, he has been
principal of Larry Bowne Architects, first in New York City
and now in Manhattan, KS.
This is Bowne’s second appearance on HGTV this year. His design work has been
published and exhibited in multiple venues, including magazine articles in Interiors, Dwell and the Village Voice;
and at the Marianne Boesky Gallery (NY, NY), Marvin Hall at the University of
Kansas and the Chang Gallery at Kansas State University.
Bowne has worked with students on various design/build projects, including a
proposed renovation of Dickens Hall on the K-State campus, a chicken coop in
Rose Hill, KS, and the House of Dance and Feathers in New Orleans. These projects have received
exposure in multiple venues, including a magazine article in Architectural Record; exhibitions at the
10th Venice Biennale in the fall of 2006 and at the Cooper-Hewitt
National Design Museum (spring and summer 2007); and media coverage on the
Weather Channel, National Public Radio and the ABC television series “Extreme
Makeover: Home Edition.”
