Architecture Firm Creates Scholarship

Horst, Terrill, & Karst Architects, PA, Topeka and Overland Park, Kansas, have made a gift of $26,000 to the Kansas State University College of Architecture, Planning and Design to establish the Gary G. Karst Scholarship.
The gift was made on behalf of the firm by its four current partners, Mark Franzen, Don Pruitt, Keith Blackburn and Charles Smith, all of whom are K-State graduates.
The Gary G. Karst Scholarship will honor Karst, co-founder of Horst, Terrill, & Karst Architects, PA, who recently died after battling leukemia, and it will also provide financial assistance to students enrolled in the Department of Architecture in the College of Architecture, Planning, and Design at K-State. The recipient of the scholarship will be a student entering his or her fourth or fifth year in the Department of Architecture. Preference will be given to students who exhibit tremendous leadership qualities, excellent design skills and a passion for architecture. Preference will also be given to students from a small community.
Karst, who was a native of Barton County, Kansas, and resident of Topeka, graduated from K-State in 1960 with a degree in architecture from the College of Architecture, Planning, and Design. While at K-State, he was a member of Tau Sigma Delta architecture honor society and Tau Kappa Epsilon fraternity. Karst designed several notable projects throughout Manhattan and the state of Kansas, most recently creating the International Grains Program Conference Building. Karst was married to Loretta Marie Karst, who works for the State of Kansas as an administrative assistant.
Karst and his wife were members of Presidents Club, a KSU Foundation philanthropic leadership organization for friends and alumni of K-State.
Horst, Terrill, & Karst Architects, PA has successfully provided its clients with comprehensive architectural services since its founding in 1958. The firm completes new design, addition and renovation projects throughout Kansas, Missouri and Iowa. In 1997, Horst, Terrill, & Karst Architects, PA expanded from its Topeka office to better serve the Kansas City area by opening a satellite office in Overland Park, Kan. The firm has 28 employees in their Topeka and Overland Park offices, of which 22 are K-State graduates.
