Gwen Owens Wilson
Associate Professor Gwen Owens-Wilson is recognized for 23 years of dedicated service to the Kansas State University College of Architecture, Planning and Design.
Professor Owens-Wilson received a BA degree from the University of Oklahoma in 1959, a BArch from Howard University in 1972, and an MS in 1980 and a PhD in 1982 from the University of Tennessee. A registered architect, she has served in various capacities within the American Institute of Architects (AIA).
During her tenure at Kansas State University, Professor Owens-Wilson taught in the environmental design studies program and served as program director from 1990-1997. She also served as a special assistant to the provost from 1993-1995, as an assistant dean for the College of Architecture, Planning and Design from 1995-1997 and taught at Chongging Jianzhu University, Chongging, People’s Republic of China, during 1996-1997.
In 1998, Professor Owens-Wilson joined the faculty of the Department of Interior Architecture and Product Design where she taught studio and other courses. She served seven years as a faculty senator for the college and department, five years as a founding member of the College Committee on Planning and seven years as a national representative on the AIA National Committee on Interiors (with one year as national education chairperson).
A tireless worker who is always available to provide assistance, Professor Owens-Wilson is a mentor and role model for not only students but also young faculty members. Her dedication to higher education is evidenced through her selection to receive the Chinese Fellowship Medal, one of only ten such awards given annually. She has also been recognized by Golden Key International Honorary for her contributions to the university.
Professor Owens-Wilson exhibits the finest qualities that exemplify excellence in the educators of Kansas State University. Her many friends and colleagues provide this citation to her in appreciation of her accomplishments and service to the College of Architecture, Planning and Design.
