Albert Edward Sanner, 1920-2001

Albert Edward Sanner, 81, of Manhattan, died March 20 at the St. Joseph Senior Community.

He was born January 14, 1920, to Emma Stocks Sanner and Albert E. Sanner Sr., in Decatur, IL. He received a BS in Architecture from the University of Illinois in 1948 after returning to Illinois from serving in the military during WWII, where he was a captain in the Army Air Corps and served overseas in India.

In February of 1951, he received his BS in architectural engineering from the University of Illinois. In June of 1966, he received his master’s degree in architecture from the University of Nebraska.

Mr. Sanner was married to Margaret Whalin on March 7, 1942. They have three children: Ann Sanner, Michael Sanner, and Patricia Asmussen; and three grandchildren, all of whom survive.

He was a practicing architect in Jackson, MS, Ft. Wayne, IN, and Urbana, IL, before becoming a professor of architecture at the University of Illinois and Kansas State University. He retired from Kansas State University in May, 1985, after teaching 21 years at KSU.

Over the years, he belonged to the American Association of University Professors, Collegiate Schools of Architecture, and American Institute of Architects.

Mr. Sanner played clarinet in a band most of his life, starting with high school, followed by college and many city bands. The last band was the Manhattan Municipal Band. He loved music.

He was also a watercolor painter and liked to go out to the country and paint the scenery.

Funeral services were at 2 pm Saturday, March 24, at the First Congregational Church in Manhattan with Rev. R. Kent Cormack officiating. Cremation was planned following the funeral services with inurnment to be held at a later date in Illinois.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorial gifts be made to the First Congregational Church in Manhattan. Contributions may be left in care of the Yorgensen-Meloan-Londeen Funeral Home, 1616 Poyntz Avenue, Manhattan, KS.
