Charles "Dick" McDonald, 1933-1997

Charles Richard “Dick” McDonald, 64, 1918 Leavenworth St., died Dec. 23, 1997, at his home, following a brief illness.

Mr. McDonald was born Jan. 30, 1933, at Fort Scott and attended the University of Kansas from 1951 to 1953, when he joined the U.S. Navy during the Korean conflict.

He later attended Kansas State University, where he received a bachelor of science in engineering in 1960. He worked for Caterpillar Tractor Co., Peoria, Ill., as a research engineer from 1960 to 1966.

Mr. McDonald received a master of science degree in architecture from KSU in 1976, and that year he received the Outstanding Undergraduate Teaching Award from KSU.

He had been a professor in the interior architecture department at KSU and had previuosly served on the faculty of the Engineering Department of Applied Mechanics, also at KSU.

He married Beatrice N. Heffermann in 1958, and she preceded him in death in 1973. He married Ann L. (Gudgel) Johnson in 1974. She survives of the home.

Other survivors include a son, Mark McDonald, Manhattan; a daughter, Cathy McDonald, Dallas; and two stepdaughters, Jill Johnson van Tiel, Crested Butte, Colo., and Ginger Johnson, Tacoma, Wash.

Mr. McDonald donated his body to the Kansas University Medical Center’s Department of Anatomy and Cell Biology, Kansas City, Kan., for research.

Memorial services will be held at a later date. Memorials can be made to the Dick McDonald memorial fund for the architecture student courtyard or to the National Association of the Mentally Ill, in care of Edwards-Yorgensen-Meloan Funeral Home, 1616 Poyntz Ave., which is handling arrangements.
