William R. "Bill" Jahnke, 1926-1997

William Robert Jahnke was born March 2, 1926, in Pittsburgh, PA. He passed away Friday, March 7, 1997.

Professor Jahnke served as the U.S. Navy ROTC from 1944 until 1946 when he was honorably discharged. In 1948, he received a B.S. in mechanical engineering from Duke University in Durham, NC.

From 1953 through 1967, Professor Jahnke established a consulting firm and practiced consulting engineering in the Greater Pittsburgh Area with a branch office in San Juan, Puerto Rico. During this time, he lectured in the Department of Architecture at Carnegie Mellon University.

In 1968, Professor Jahnke joined the College of Architecture and Design at Kansas State University, Manhattan, serving as assistant dean from 1970-1993. In 1969 and 1988, he was chosen as Outstanding Teacher of the Year.

Professor Jahnke had many interests. He enjoyed his personal computer, oil paintings and watercolors, photography, rock collecting and sailing his boat, the Nanci Ann.
