Former Staff Member Passes Away

Evelyn J. Press, 84, of Manhattan, died Tuesday, Jan. 30, 2007, at the Mercy Regional Health Center in Manhattan.

The family provided some of the following information.

She was born Sept. 9, 1922 at Kanopolis, the daughter of Wesley Isaiah Reeves and Georgia Victoria Linn Reeves. She grew up in Kanopolis, where she attended the local schools and was a 1940 graduate of the Kanopolis High School. She also attended Marymount College.

Mrs. Press taught at the Smokey Hill Grade School, the Shilling Air Force Base School and worked as a secretary at the University Methodist Church, all in Salina for a number of years.

She was united in marriage to Harold L. Press on April 27, 1947 at Salina. He survives of the home.

Mr. and Mrs. Press lived in Salina, Junction City and Chapman before coming to Manhattan in 1962. Since moving to Manhattan, Mrs. Press worked seven years as a secretary to the president at the Manhattan Christian College and for 17 years was a secretary for the dean of Architecture and Design at K-State before retiring in 1986.

She was a member of the University Christian Church, BPW, Kansas Association for Family and Community Education (FCE) and was a 4-H and Cub Scout leader for many years.

She was preceded in death by her parents, a sister Helen Mae Kalb, and an infant brother.

In addition to her husband, Mrs. Press is survived by a son, Michael E. Press, and his wife Rosemary, of Topeka; a daughter, Michelle L. Netson, and her husband Jon of Manhattan; 10 granddaughters and one great-grandson.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Friday, Feb. 2, at the University Christian Church, Manhattan, with the Rev. David Pape officiating. Graveside services will be at 3 p.m. Friday in the Kanopolis Cemetery in Kanopolis.
