Lane L. Marshall, 1937 - 2003

Lane L. Marshall, 65, of Wamego, died June 10, 2003, at Stormont-Vail Regional Medical Center in Topeka, KS.

He was born on September 19, 1937, in Syracuse, New York, the son of Arthur Stewart and LeEtta (Garlock) Marshall.

On April 20, 1991, he married Susan M. Scott in Manhattan, KS. She survives of the home.

Lane came to Kansas State University in 1989 to be Dean of the College of Architecture, Planning, and Design. He had previously headed the Department of Landscape Architecture at Texas A&M University from 1981 to 1988. He founded and directed his own design firm in Sarasota, Florida, from 1961 to 1981.

Lane was a Fellow of the American Society of Landscape Architects (ASLA) and served as that organization’s national president from 1978 to 1980. He had also served as secretary/treasurer and trustee and chaired numerous task forces, committees and councils for the professional society. He received their President’s Medal for outstanding contributions to the profession. He received 20 honor and 11 merit awards for executed works from the Florida Chapter of the ASLA. He won 31 design awards for landscape architecture projects and wrote numerous professional reports and monographs for the ASLA and others. He also presented many papers at professional meetings and was a visiting critic in many landscape architecture programs.

Lane’s bachelor’s degree was from the University of Florida and his master’s was from the University of Illinois. He received the first Distinguished Alumnus Award from the Department of Landscape Architecture at the University of Florida. He was a licensed landscape architect in Florida and Texas. He served in the U.S. Army from 1957 to 1963, with 18 months of active duty.

In addition to his wife, other survivors include three daughters: Shelley Cobb of Tampa, FL; Merelee Boulris of Sarasota, FL; and Lilly Garland Le Marshall of Wamego, KS; one step-son, Paul Scott Angle of Las Vegas, NV; and one grandson, Alex Cobb of Tampa, FL.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one son, Ken Marshall.

Memorial services were held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, June 13, at the First Congregational Church in Manhattan. Yorgensen-Meloan-Londeen Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
