Boasts Three Top 10 Programs

Interior Architecture Students Win Competition

Tuesday, June 13th, 2006

Two students in the College of Architecture, Planning and Design were among the top three winners in a recent design competition.

Carly Hillman, Overland Park, KS, received first place and $1000, and Kimberly Kolkovich, St. Louis, MO, received third place and $300 in the 2006 Annual National Student Design Competition sponsored by the Institute of Store Planners (ISP). Both students just completed their third year of studies in interior architecture and product design.

As the school with the winning entry, the Department of Interior Architecture and Product Design also received a $1000 prize.

The competition program called for a prototype design of a new children’s apparel store.

According to Associate Professor Neal Hubbell, studio instructor, all students in the studio created a project as part of their spring 2006 studies. Then, the students themselves decided whether or not to enter the competition.

“This annual competition has been around a long time,” Hubbell said, “but this is the first time any of our students have entered. To have two top winners selected from more than 90 total entries is a real tribute to the quality of our students’ work,” he said.

Created in 1961, ISP has been dedicated to developing creative, competent retail design professionals to meet the needs of the ever-changing landscape of retailing. Located in Tarrytown, New York, the organization serves more than 1000 members and 14 chapters in the U.S. and internationally.
