After the Hartford ran aground in the Kansas River in 1855 the company met with settlers who were already in the area and joined forces to form a new town.  Among the native tallgrass prairies in the midst of a valley oasis, the city of Manhattan planted its roots, and since that day, Manhattan has grown to be the gem of the Flint Hills.  Today Manhattan, affectionately called the Little Apple® after its namesake, enjoys over 150 years as regional leader in trade, education, government, health care and entertainment.  Information copied from the Manhattan Chamber of Commerce.
