Dr. Carl Smith
Carl’s presentation, “Starseeds and Blockbusters,” features his recent projects
made from reclaimed local industrial byproducts. He is an Assistant Professor of
Landscape Architecture at the University of Arkansas, where he uses his work for
public art and outreach, as well as landscape teaching aides and research tools.
A native of
Sheffield, England, but resident in Fayetteville Arkansas since 2007,
Carl Smith is an Assistant Professor of Landscape Architecture at the
University of Arkansas. Carl has a Bachelor of Science with honors
in Environmental Science from the University of Lancaster and a
Master’s degree in landscape design and a doctorate in sustainable
housing design from the University of Sheffield. He also holds a
Postgraduate Certificate in Urban Design from the University of
Newcastle. Carl is a Royal Chartered Landscape Architect and has
practiced landscape and urban design throughout the UK. His projects
have included town extension master plans; townscape analyses and
strategies; park and greenway master plans; and concepts and detailed
designs for a wide range of public spaces. Carl teaches studios in
sustainable housing, urban design, park-planning and regional
character in the landscape. His primary research focuses on the
implementation of sustainable design and development, with a
particular focus on housing environments. Carl has been published in
Landscape;
Urban Design; Vista;
Green Places;
Sustain;
the Journal of Urban Design; and
the International Journal of Art and
Design Education. He is also
primary author of the book Sustainable
Residential Landscapes: A Checklist Tool,
which was published internationally by Wiley-Blackwell in September
2007. Carl has delivered lectures on sustainable housing
issues in Europe, South America and the USA to bodies such as The
British Landscape Institute, The American Society of Landscape
Architects, The American Planning Association, The International
Federation of Landscape Architects and The European Council of
Landscape Architecture Schools.
