The 11th annual Bowman Design Forum of the Kansas State
University College of Architecture, Planning and Design is scheduled for
Friday, December 11, 2009. As a part of that event, lectures will be presented
by Dennis Cusack and Greg Papay.
The Forum will begin at 1:30 p.m. The lectures will follow
at 4:00 p.m. Both will be held in the Little Theatre of the K-State Student
Union. All events are open to the public without charge. Attendance at the
lecture can be documented for continuing education credit for design
professionals by contacting Diane Potts.
Dennis Cusack, AIA, LEED AP, is managing
principal at SRG Partnership, Inc., a firm with three locations on the West
Coast. The studio has found success in operating by six core values at the
cornerstone of every project, and Cusack’s strategic design approach and
advocacy for the client’s perspective during each phase of the process results
in imaginative spaces that enhance the context for which they are created. His
work in the public and private sectors, including higher education
institutions, medical facilities and projects for Fortune 500 companies have
benefited from this signature approach to architecture. Cusack’s leadership in
sustainability also casts a vision for the firm and its clients, developing
collaborations with researchers and scientists to influence the way the firm
approaches every project. Using this knowledge, the firm has developed more
efficient designs as models of the future. His dedication to the advancement of
the field has led him to serve on the board of the AIA Portland Chapter and the
Architecture Foundation of Oregon.
Greg Papay, FAIA, serves as managing
partner for Lake|Flato Architects of San Antonio, Texas. He has been with the
25-year old firm for over 15 years, facilitating its growth during his tenure
from a dozen, locally-focused architects to a staff of over 60, with emphasis
on national projects. The firm remains attached to virtues brought forward by
the late William Turnbull, termed as “specifically Texas insights,” with a keen
physical and imaginative responsiveness to the challenges posted by the
unrelenting elements of weather, vast landscape and local building traditions.
Their work has largely been influenced by midcentury Texas Modernism, and the
theory of O’Neil Ford that “Architecture isn’t sculpture”-rather, that
structures created are about earth instead of air. Papay has been involved with
a variety of projects, including the arena for the San Antonio Spurs and the
School of Nursing for the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston,
which was selected by the AIA as a 2006 Top Ten Green Project. His commitment
to design excellence extends far beyond his practice, having lectured and
juried extensively to advocate place-based architecture.
During their visit, Cusack and Papay will lead the jury for
the Bowman Design Forum, a competition open to K-State architecture students in
their third year of study. Brent Bowman, a 1972 Kansas
State University
architecture graduate and principal of the Manhattan
based architecture firm Bowman Bowman Novick, with offices in Manhattan
and Kansas City,
sponsors the Forum.
