University General Education Expectations Pertaining to all Departments

A minimum of eighteen (18) University General Education credits (UGE) must be taken, of which at least six (6) must be in courses numbered 300 or above.  Of these eighteen (18) UGE credits, three (3) credits may be taken within the College of Architecture, Planning and Design.  However, none can be taken in the student’s major field.  No more than two (2) UGE courses may be taken in a single discipline.  UGE courses must be taken at KSU although transfer credits may reduce the number of lower level UGE courses required.  There is a sliding scale (information available at: http://www.k-state.edu/uge/aboutuge/policies.htm#transcredit) employed to determine the number of UGE courses required.  Students who participate in study abroad programs approved by KSU will meet UGE credit (6 hrs) at the 300 level upon successful completion of the program (information available at: http://www.k-state.edu/uge/aboutuge/policies.htm#studyabrd).  Communicating with your academic advisor while considering plans for completing the UGE requirements is critical.  The University registrar’s list of UGE courses is available at: http://www.k-state.edu/registrar/enroll/gened.html. An annotated list of courses offered each semester is available at: http://www.k-state.edu/uge/courses/annotated.htm.

Beginning students are encouraged to select specific introductory-level general education courses with the intention that they might develop concentrations or minors (information available at: http://courses.k-state.edu/catalog/undergraduate/degrees/ [scroll down]) by taking advanced courses in their later years.

Examples

  1. No more than two UGE courses may be taken in a single discipline (for example no more than 2 Math courses, 2 Econ courses, 2 Phil courses)
  2. Three (3) credits may be taken within the College of Architecture, Planning and Design but not in your major field.  For example, an Architecture or Interior Architecture student can take LAR 322 for UGE credit but a Landscape Architecture student cannot take LAR 322 for UGE credit.  However, a Landscape Architecture student can take PLAN 315 for UGE credit.  Architecture and Interior Architecture students also can take PLAN 315 for UGE credit but cannot count both LAR 322 and PLAN 315 for UGE credit.
  3. Six (6) UGE credits must be in courses numbered 300 or above.
