MARGARET KAII-ZIEGLER is remembered by the KSU faculty as an excellent and active student, and she has continued to demonstrate those attributes in her professional career. Originally from Los Angeles, Kaii-Ziegler pursued a Bachelor of Science degree in Landscape Architecture from California State Polytechnic University, Pomona and graduated in 1982. After working for a short time in the private sector as a landscape architect, Kaii-Ziegler served in the Peace Corps for nearly three years as a Natural Resource Conservation Extensionist in the Central American country of Guatemala. Kaii-Ziegler then came to KSU to pursue a Master of Regional and Community Planning where her thesis dealt with approaches to evaluating water and sewer projects in developing countries. During her time at KSU, she was president of the student chapter of the American Planning Association and also a graduate teaching assistant. From the summer of 1987 through November of 1991, Kaii-Ziegler was employed in the Department of Planning and Zoning, Queen Anne's County, Maryland, first as an Urban Design Planner and then as Deputy Director. As Deputy Director, she supervised the County development review process and advised the Planning Commission, Board of Appeals, and County Commissioners with respect to the various County ordinances and comprehensive plan. While working for Queen Anne's County, she was appointed to the Kent Island Industrial Park Design Review Board and served on the Governor's Commission on the development of the state forest conservation program. Her current position is with The Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission, Montgomery County, Maryland, a progressive and unique regional agency in the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area. As a Community Planner, she is involved directly with developers, local citizen groups, and individuals of the public in the development and implementation of County master plans in the Bethesda-Chevy Chase and North Bethesda region. She finds her work with the community and her home life with the addition of a new daughter both challenging and rewarding. Kaii-Ziegler has continued to be active in her field, speaking at various conferences and workshops in Maryland. Kaii-Ziegler received certification in 1991 by the American Institute of Certified Planners and maintains memberships in the American Society of Landscape Architects and the American Planning Association.
