From 1990 until her retirement this past summer, Dr. Marcia Schuley played a key role in the life of the Kansas State University College of Architecture, Planning and Design.

As associate director of K-State's Career and Employment Services (CES), Marcie served as liaison to the Colleges of Engineering and Architecture, Planning and Design, advising students and alumni regarding job placement while interacting with faculty and employers to achieve job development and enhanced university relations. She was instrumental in developing and guiding the All University Career Fair, often noted as one of the largest and finest career fair events in the country, and initiating the CES website to solicit and post job openings and career-building activities.

Her prior professional appointments included serving as director of the Older Kansas Employment Program and as a specialist in consultation and education at Pawnee Mental Health Services, both in Manhattan. On the K-State campus, Marcie also held positions in the Center for Student Development, Department of Administration and Foundations, and the Non-Traditional Study Program. She earned three degrees from K-State—a BA in English; an MS in education, guidance and counseling; and a PhD in education, counseling and student personnel.

Marcie has been an active community leader as a co-founding member of both the Flint Hills Breadbasket and the Manhattan Habitat for Humanity. She has served on the Phi Kappa Phi Scholastic Honorary Scholarship Committee for K-State and was a member of the Southwest Association of Colleges and Employers and the Alpha Lambda Delta, Phi Alpha Mu and Kappa Delta Pi scholastic honoraries. Working with a team of faculty advisors and students, Marcie initiated for the College of Architecture, Planning and Design a mock interview program which has grown in size and popularity over the years. She also established a variety of programs, including resume workshops and critiques, portfolio workshops and employer panels, to prepare our students to seek suitable employment and launch successful careers. It was Marcie's suggestion that the college establish its own career fair, DesignExpo, which has grown in its six years of existence from an initial employer attendance of 38 firms to an amazing 113 this past year.

Because of her energy, dedication and persistence, hundreds of our alumni as well as our current students are better prepared to enter and be successful in the workplace. We are extremely pleased to present Dr. Marcia Schuley with a Kansas State University Distinguished Service Award.
