2006 Distinguished Service Award [ First | Previous | Next | Last ] |
Alan Lauck received the bachelor of interior architecture in 1972 from Kansas State University. In the years since then, Alan has received much professional recognition for his work, and he credits a great deal of his success to the education he received at K-State. Alan has over 30 years of experience in the design service industry. He began his career in 1972 in St. Louis with Hellmuth, Obata & Kassabaum (HOK), the world's largest architectural practice, and in 1974 he established HOK's first regional interiors business in Dallas. Returning to St. Louis in 1978 as the first corporate director of HOK's interior architecture practice, Alan was elected to the firm's management committee and board of directors. After leaving HOK, he was president and major shareholder of Neville Lewis Associates, a then New York-based firm. In 1984, Alan founded his own firm, Working Spaces:The Lauck Group, which built its early Dallas reputation with diverse projects for high profile clients. Over the next 15 years, design of headquarters and other significant, often multiple, projects for clients in Texas, across the country and internationally expanded the firm's capability and recognition. In 1997, he founded Aha!Works, a firm known as a thought leader in high performance workplace strategy for organizations looking for innovative workplace ideas. Alan retired in 2003 from both businesses. A member of the Texas Society of Architects, Alan served as chair of that organization's committee on interior architecture. He has been a member of the International Interior Design Association, an associate member of the American Institute of Architects (AIA) and a charter member of the AIA's committee on interior architecture. He has also served on many competition juries and as a member of the corporate committee for the Dallas Museum of Art and the Steelcase Customer Advisory Board. A registered interior designer in Texas, Alan recently completed a six-year term on the State of Texas Board of Architectural Examiners. Alan achieved his objective of retiring from the design industry at age 55. He and his wife of 25 years, Cheryl Coleman, also a designer, are now living in Santa Fe, New Mexico. For the last two years, Alan has been the chair of the College of Architecture, Planning and Design Dean's Professional Advisory Board. Under his leadership, the group has thrived and forged an ambitious action agenda. Alan uses his wealth of experience to direct the advisory board toward significant contributions to the college's programs. A life member of the Foundation Advisory Council for the School of Architecture at the University of Texas-Austin, Alan shares ideas gained from that experience that also play a pivotal in his leadership in our college. The time he generously gives to our college is matched by his fiscal generosity. Alan was named our college's Alumni Fellow in 1989. His tireless devotion and myriad contributions are exemplary samples of the support we need and have come to expect from our alumni. Alan is a most deserving nominee to receive a Kansas State University Distinguished Service Award. |
