The calm, self-effacing character of Fred Truog is but a visage to the true intensity and commitment he provides the architectural community of Kansas City. This quiet servitude not only embraces an exemplary practice, but an impressive service commitment to the profession through his activities in the American Institute of Architects, the Missouri Council of Architects, and the Kansas City Chapter/AIA.

Fred has served as Secretary, President, and as a member of the Board of Directors of the Kansas City Chapter/AIA. When not holding office in the KCC/AIA, he has served as chair for numerous committees and task forces. Moreover, Fred was the Founding President of the Kansas City Architectural Foundation, an organization dedicated to the enhancement of the architectural environment of Kansas City. Service to the Missouri Council of Architects has included holding the positions of Secretary, President, and member of the Board of Directors. A member of the Board of Directors of the Missouri Board of Registration of Architects, Professional Engineers and Land Surveyors, Fred served that board as a delegate to the National Council of Architectural Registration Boards. At the regional and national levels, he has held offices and committee chairships in the American Institute of Architects.

Concerned with the quality of life and the environment in Kansas City, Fred served on the Mayor's task forces on building codes and construction processes, resulting in his chairing, for two terms, the Building Code Board of Appeals of Kansas City. Membership on the Midtown 2000 Task Force, the Westport West Neighborhood Association, and the Mayor's Task Force to Reuse the Union Station is indicative of his commitment to the city in which he practices, as was his coordination of the Traffic Island Beautification Program for Westport Road and the Southwest Trafficway. Complimenting these activities, Fred has been president of the Optimist Club of City Center and an active member in the Chamber of Commerce.

A concern for children and the family is seen in Fred's civic activities. He has been on the Board of Directors of the Family and Children's Services, and Vice President and member of the Board of Directors for the Child Advocacy Services Center, Inc. Twice he has been recognized by the Child Advocacy Services Center, Inc., for his donated professional services in remodeling and adding to The Children's Place Child Abuse Center.

Fred also served as Founding President of the KSU Kansas City Area Alumni Association of the College of Architecture and Design. This organization has been instrumental in assisting our college and its multiple presence in the Kansas City community.
