For more than 20 years, Marvin Manlove has been instrumental to the success of the College of Architecture and Design, and on the "cutting edge" of interior architecture in numerous endeavors during his careers as a student and a professional. Manlove was one of the first recipients of the newly offered interior architecture degree and became principal of his firm, Calcara Duffendack Foss Manlove of Kansas City, in an unusually short time after graduation. The firm was one of the first to develop a structure illustrating the significant relationship between the disciplines of architecture and interior architecture in a holistic way. Manlove is himself very much a multidisciplinary designer; he is both a licensed architect and a product designer who, in 1980, won a Gold Medal for Product Design in the prestigious International Business Designers Competition. In addition, he recognized early on the positive correlation between strong computer skills and successful interior architecture design endeavors, and he has worked closely with interior architecture faculty to influence the curriculum, facilitating the department's efforts through financial and equipment gifts to provide this skill to its students. Manlove serves as an adjunct participant in courses offered by the College in Kansas City, introducing students to interior architecture as a discipline and providing the opportunity for students contemplating their career choice to visit his firm's offices. Realizing that knowledge gained in the classroom and studio may not fully equip students for successful interviews and employment, Manlove has participated for some years in mock interviews so that students may acquire important skills for that setting. His was among the first effort to provide this experience for students in the design disciplines. Also a member of the College of Architecture and Design Dean's Advisory Council, Manlove was instrumental in establishing the College's very first professional advisory group in 1983, the Department of Interior Architecture Advisory Board. He has served as a member of that group continuously since its inception and as Chair during the past three years. He is also active in organizing the annual Kansas City Architects, Designers, Dealers and Representatives golf tournament which raises vitally needed funds for scholarships, competition prizes, and equipment procurement. Manlove's leadership has been pivotal in the development of the highly successful interior architecture program of the College of Architecture and Design. He is the consummate professional that faculty aspire their students to be. |
