Gary Coates
2000 Undergraduate Outstanding Teaching Award

Upon recommendation of students and faculty in the College of Architecture, Planning, and Design, Kansas State University is privileged to acknowledge the outstanding record in undergraduate teaching of Professor Gary Coates.

Internationally known and respected as a scholar, Professor Coates articulately engages his students in the critically important design and ethical issues at the core of his prolific research and professional service agenda. Year after year, every sophomore student in the Department of Architecture and the Department of Interior Architecture enrolls in Environmental Systems in Architecture 1. His masterfully developed lectures and carefully designed collaborative exercises lead Professor Coates= students to fresh understanding of the natural forces acting on the planet. The young students are introduced to strategies for utilizing the sun and the wind in the design of beautiful buildings that ensure human comfort and conserve scarce natural resources. The students gain an understanding of their responsibility to be vigilant stewards of Earth, of the necessity for careful analysis, technological aptitude, and design skills as they explore ways of making landscapes, buildings, and settlements which celebrate place and tradition, accommodate change, and speak to the human condition. Professor Coates creates an educational environment that supports the explorations of his students--guiding, reinforcing, illuminating complex ideas, and inspiring them to achieve far more than they ever imagined.
