2005 Distinguished Service Award [ First | Previous | Next | Last ] |
Larry Walling received the Bachelor of Landscape Architecture, Cum Laude, in 1975 from Kansas State University. In the years since then, Walling has received much professional recognition for his work, and he credits much of his success to the education he received at K-State. With more than 28 years of experience working for the National Park Service in park and recreation facility planning, design and construction, Walling has risen through the ranks, serving as Section Chief of the Branch of Construction Central Team, Chief of the Branch of Construction Western Team, Quality Leader, Project Manager with Construction Portfolio and Branch Chief of the Project Management Division. Currently, Walling is Chief of the Transportation Division, a post he has filled for the past year and a half. He is based at the Denver Service Center, the planning, design and construction office for the National Park Service, where he assists in managing the National Park Service's professional programs. Walling's National Park Service experience includes eight years in Northwest Arkansas where he concentrated on design and construction projects along the 135 miles of the Buffalo National River. In 1988, Walling received the Federal Design Achievement Award from the National Endowment for the Arts for the design of the Buffalo Point Campground rehabilitation project. He also spent nearly two years as a project manager at Hot Springs National Park in Arkansas, overseeing more than 30 planning, design and construction projects. Because of his interests, expertise and willingness, Walling has been head of K-State's Landscape Architecture Advisory Council since 1995. In that role, he has led the group in discussions with faculty and students that have led to curriculum revisions and the advancement of technology capabilities. Walling and his wife Sally have also established a scholarship for K-State landscape architecture students, acknowledging the role his K-State education played in his professional successes and facilitating current students' ability to share in the challenging but rewarding experience of studying landscape architecture. A registered landscape architect in Kansas and Arkansas, Walling is also a practitioner member of accreditation teams for the Landscape Architectural Accreditation board and in 2003 was made a Fellow of the American Society of Landscape Architecture. For two years, he was a member of the Editorial Advisory Committee for Landscape Architecture magazine. He was also named the College of Architecture, Planning, and Design Alumni Fellow in 2003. Larry Walling exemplifies the energy, innovation and dedication to quality and service that our College strives to foster in its students. We take pride in his accomplishments and delight in nominating him to receive a 2005 Kansas State University Distinguished Service Award. |
