Henry W. Schirmer, FAIA, has been named the recipient of the Kansas State University Distinguished Service Award for 1986. For nearly four decades, Henry has exemplified the highest standards of architectural practice and service at local, state and national levels. The owner of Archimedia, a publishing company for architecture works, he has served as Editor of ProFile, The Official Directory of the AIA, and also The International Directory of the AIA, which offers clients, professionals, journalists, educators and students a rich store of heretofore unavailable but vital information about the architectural profession, firms and individual practitioners. His distinguished record of activity in the AIA at the local and state level has been complimented by service on several national committees. He has served on and chaired the AIA Committee on Office Practice, he has chaired the Committee on Project Management, served on the AIA Documents Committee, chaired the Board of Production Systems for Architects and Engineers, a service system of the AIA. Henry served as Regional Director for the Central States Region from 1979 through 1981. In 1971, he was elected to the College of Fellows of the Institute. He was then elected to two consecutive terms as Treasurer of the Institute and served from 1982 through 1985. Since 1975, he has lectured on Compensation Management for Architects and Engineers. He has presented over 40 seminars on this subject and has been a participant in this regard at four AIA National Conventions and three Regional Conventions. In addition, he has spoken a number of times to student classes at Kansas State University and the University of Kansas as well as colleges out-of-state. He is a member of the Coxe Group, Management Consultants to Architects, Interior Designers, Engineers and others in the design community. He specializes in Finance, Organizational Planning and Human Resource Planning. As Treasurer of the AIA, he also served as Treasurer of the AIA Foundation, the AIA Service Corporation, and the AIA Political Action Committee. In June, 1985, he was appointed by Governor John Carlin to the Kansas State Board of Technical Professions for a four-year term. He is listed in Who's Who in America (six editions) and Who's Who in the World (last two editions). Throughout his long and distinguished career, Henry has been a wise counselor and valued supporter of the College of Architecture and Design at Kansas State University. He has visited classes, led seminars, advised Deans and Department Heads, been an Ekdahl Memorial Lecturer, hired dozens of KSU undergraduates for summer jobs and internships, and groomed scores of graduates for leadership roles in the profession across the state and nation. Henry is the first recipient of this award who is not an alumnus of Kansas State University. Other past recipients of the Distinguished Service Award are Howard T.
