Through his professional activities and service, Dennis Scheer has advanced the practice and recognition of landscape architecture in our region.

Scheer received a Bachelor of Science in Architectural Studies from the University of Nebraska in 1976 and the Master of Landscape Architecture from Kansas State University in 1981. With an educational background emphasizing both architecture and landscape architecture, Scheer has developed an appreciation for the integration of the two related fields into a single, complete discipline.

His professional experience is broad and varied. It includes design and development of residential, commercial, and recreational projects for a Kansas landscape architectural/civil engineering firm as well as planning responsibilities with Leo A. Daly Company of Omaha, Nebraska.

In 1983, Scheer joined The Clark Enersen Partners of Lincoln, Nebraska, becoming a part of that firm's long history of excellence in landscape architecture. He became Principal of the firm in 1987, Vice President/Secretary in 1989, and now serves as Senior Principal. A few of Scheer's most recent projects include the Camp Catron Master Plan in Nebraska City; Cooper Park, Pioneer Park Nature Center, Lincoln Foundation Gardens, Trago Park, Folsom Children's Zoo, and the Star City Aquatic Center in Lincoln; and Master Plans for Concordia University in Seward, Doane College in Crete, and the University of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha.

Scheer believes that landscape architecture is a sophisticated design discipline in which the exterior elements of a project are related to each other and the project integrated with the site. To Scheer, landscape architecture is more than just aesthetics--it's anticipating how the project will impact the surrounding environment and community, then working to make that impact positive.

As an instructor at both Kansas State University and the University of Nebraska, Scheer has influenced students, interns, and practitioners to pursue advanced study in landscape architecture. He has also served on the professional advisory board of the Kansas State University Department of Landscape Architecture, participated many times as a guest critic, mentored many student interns and young practicing professionals, and taken part in the College's highly successful mock interview program.

Among Scheer's most significant contributions to the discipline of landscape architecture are his many and varied professional activities. Scheer has served on the Nebraska Statewide Arboretum Advisory Council; the Lancaster County, Nebraska, Ecological Committee; and the Nebraska State Registration Board for Landscape Architects. He currently serves on the Concordia University Foundation Board; the Community Forestry Advisory Board of Lincoln, Nebraska; the Lincoln, Nebraska, Pioneers Park Reforestation Committee; and the Lincoln, Nebraska, Urban Design Committee. A registered professional landscape architect in Kansas and Nebraska, Scheer maintains membership in the American Society of Landscape Architects (ASLA), and has served as President of the Great Plains Chapter.

We are privileged to count Dennis Scheer among the alumni of our College of Architecture, Planning, and Design, and we are proud to nominate him to receive a Kansas State University Distinguished Service Award.
